It's hard to believe that this boy of mine is coming home in two weeks. He has been a missionary in Denmark for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for two years. He has not been paid or received college credit for this. He volunteered.
He was 19 years old, had just completed his first year of college when he left. He was in the prime of his life. He put his life on hold to serve The Lord. As his mother, I couldn't have been more proud of him. Many who are not members of our church may think this is a weird or foolish thing to do, but I ask you to think about it from a non-religious view point. For two years he gave his time to someone else. He had a rigorous study schedule starting at 6:00 every single morning.
His daily life was in pursuit of something for other people's benefit. Putting his ego or fun aside, he spent countless hours serving others, helping them. This type of selfless service coming from a 19-21 year old young man is very character building. It changes you. It opens your eyes to the world a class room cannot possibly teach. He has literally given of himself for two straight years. I can't see how this is a bad or weird thing. I have seen him grow from a boy to a man in two short years. Oh, and on a side note, he speaks Danish fluently now. Score.
I can't wait to see what lies ahead of him and in his future. The world is his oyster!
I am grateful he has had this experience. I love to read his weekly letters expressing to me how much he loves his mission and how he is so happy he has had this chance.
