Capernaum and Gallilee

The town is cited in the Gospel of Luke where it was reported to have been the home of the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John, as well as the tax collector Matthew.  In Matthew 4:13 the town was reported to have been the home of Jesus.

ruins from 4th centurysynagogue

"thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church".  Peter was awesome.  Christ then told Peter he was giving him the keys of the kingdom of heaven-that's why he is holding a key in this statue.

This glass encased area is the foundation to the house of St. Peter

Here is our Capernaum cat
The Sea of Gallilee in the background-Beautiful!

When Jesus left Nazareth he settled in Capernaum where he chose his first four disciples; James, John, Peter and Andrew.

These are the remains of a 4th century synagogue.  Beneath the foundation of this synagogue lies another foundation made of basalt, which we saw a ton of on our way to this place, and perhaps this is the foundation of a synagogue from the first century AD, perhaps the one mentioned in the Gospel.  Our tour guide said their was a super old coin found between the foundations that matched more the first century than the latter.

This food was scrumptious.  I missed getting a picture of the falafels we ate.  It was YUMMY!

Oh, wow, I found a shekel in this fishes mouth!  What a coincidence.
Matthew 17
22 ¶ And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
24 ¶ And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

I love looking at all your amazing pictures from your trip...and I know there's still more to come! You have done a great job documenting it. I thought I commented on the first post, but I didn't, so just let me say that I love the pictures of the market, the alley way, and (especially) the hanging laundry!! Oh, and of course, the waterways of Burano--it's a photographers dream! Well done!!

That's so awesome you had a fabulous time! How could you not?! :) The cat pics are so funny. I guess the abundance of cats in Israel and Egypt are just like the abundance of dogs in India and Nicaragua. Except the dogs all look viciously rabid and they act like they want to rip your face off.

I'm wanting those fries and the rosemary bread. However, the fish just isn't doing it for me. But I LOVE the "shekel" in its mouth!

Julie, our family just finished D&C and I wanted to read The Book of Mormon again, but the boys chose The New Testament. We are on Matthew 11 and have been reading about some of these places where you have been. I loved when we were reading the Doctrine and Covenants and could relate to the places where we had actually been, and I'm sure you are having that same appreciation for the places you were privileged to walk on your vacation. What a blessing that is! Thanks for sharing with those of us who get to see it through your eyes, or the lens of your sweet camera rather.

What an odd coincidence that you found the coin in the fishes mouth. I wonder if that was rigged? :-)
